The Easy Way to Make a Big Impact on your Network

A few weeks ago I got a text from an old co-worker that left our project 6 months earlier. We were getting ready to implement a completely new process at my client and everyone was over worked at stressed out.  He knew that my area in particular would get a lot of scrutiny because of the sheer volume and dollar amount of the data that would pass through it.

His text was simple.  He just wished me luck and asked how things were going.  When I responded that things were hectic but going well, he wished me luck again and then did something brilliant:  he told me to reach out if I need any help or have any questions, even if it’s just asking where something is located.

The amazing thing about his approach is simplicity.  He was simply being a nice guy who went above and beyond but the more I thought about it the more I realized how truly brilliant it is.  Having left the project months earlier, we had filled in the gaps that his absence had created and it was highly unlikely that anyone would actually call him to ask a question, but what that did was remind everyone of both how much work he had done and how much we enjoyed having him around.  We were reminded of how committed he was to helping us, whether it was his job or not.  And it cost him nothing.

Everyone respected him more after the interaction than before. Showing concern for his old team left a good taste in our mouth and we talked about it and about him.
