5 Instant Pick – Me – Ups
We all have them. Those days where everything seems to be going wrong and just about everything you touch breaks. Its easy to get down when things like that happen and unfortunately this just perpetuates the situation. So, the following are five things that I do that work instantly and anywhere, no matter where you are, to make me feel better.
- Smile at the next person you see. It really doesn’t matter who it is or why, but just the act of smiling at someone else makes you feel better, even if they don’t smile back. Just make a commitment to do this whether you feel like it or not and see how much better you feel.
- Read an uplifting or funny quote. Some of my favorite quotes for feeling like this are below (yes, two of the five are by Coco Chanel, but you know you gotta be true to who you are):
- When I am at work: “The first five days after the weekend are always the hardest”
- When I am worried: “I am an old man and have known a great many troubles, but most of them never happened.” Mark Twain
- When I am feeling out of tune with everyone else or really anytime: “In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different.” Coco Chanel
- When I am nervous about speaking up: “The most courageous act is still to think for yourself. Aloud..” Coco Chanel
- When I am just not feeling confident: “”The reason we struggle with insecurity is because we compare our behind-the-scenes with everyone else’s highlight reel.” Steve Furtick
- Compliment someone, anyone. If there is no one around, send a nice text to someone complimenting them. You can find something great about anyone and doing that will make you feel good about yourself, too.
- Take a second to think about something that you are looking forward to. This can anything, upcoming plans, a big idea that you have, time alone or something that you want to buy. Usually thinking about something that you’re excited about will get you out of a rut.
- Write down anywhere, phone, notepad, email one thing that you’ve done really well that week. No matter what it is. Maybe you made someone who was in a bad mood laugh, maybe you caught an error that others missed, maybe you created an amazing presentation or even coordinated a great outfit. Whatever success you’ve had, think about that and usually that’ll get your mind off the negative stuff and make you feel better.
Two bonus tips for those really bad days: Drop it all for a few minutes and go get ice cream or chocolate. Really, you can’t be sad when you’re having ice cream and give someone a high five. High fives are a fool proof way to make everyone smile.
I hope these tips help you to turn that frown upside down.
